Nonetheless, many township names remain duplicates in Illinois. State law specifies that no two townships in Illinois shall have the same name, and that, if the Illinois Secretary of State compares the township abstracts and finds a duplicate, the county that last adopted the name shall instead adopt a different name at the next county board meeting. The legal name of each township is the form "_ Township" or "Town of _". All told, Illinois has 1,428 such townships, and they are the slight majority of the state's general units of local government. We have more residents than 88 of Illinois 102 counties.Of the 102 counties of the state of Illinois, 84 are organized into civil townships, usually referred to as simply "townships" in state law. With 146,795 residents, over 60,000 housing units, and spread over 53 square miles, we are the largest township in DuPage County in both area and population. Our Township is home to Argonne National Labs, a science and engineering research national laboratory. We cooperate and support non profit groups like the FISH Pantry that helps feed and clothe families in need, and the DuPage Senior Citizens Council Meals on Wheels program that delivers meals and performs wellness checks to qualifying seniors in their homes. We partner with our excellent schools, instructing on a variety of educational life issues benefiting students and youth. Low cost General Assistance helps residents in specific need. Our Assessor’s Office provides property appraisal and parcel record services to all property owners. Our Highway Department maintains almost 70 miles of roads in good weather and bad. Townships, by statute, provide basic services. Townships in Illinois are the grass roots of public service in Illinois.
